The government outlawed the ANC in 1960. Mandela was captured and jailed in 1962. He spent most of his sentence at Robben Island. Seven years into his sentence, Mandela's prison cell doors were opened, his shackles were taken off and he was set free under one condition: he had to put an end to his crusade. When Mandela was offered his freedom based on this agreement, he simply got up, turned around, walked back to his cell, closed the door, and put his shackles back on.
